So, for this week's PhotoHunt theme, I did just that. I took advantage of what seemed like it would be a mild day yesterday and rode the vaporetto across the northern Venetian lagoon to the little island of jewel-colored houses.

No, IMHO, it's because there are few places as melancholically gray as the northern lagoon during the wintertime, and the brilliant colors lend a much-needed joyful glow to what otherwise would likely be a very dreary little place for nearly half the year!
So, for my PhotoHunt entry for this week, here is a "colorful" visit to Burano! Enjoy!!

UPDATED (8/7/2010): Want to see more of multi-colored Venice and Burano? Here's a short but breathtakingly lovely technicolor video called "Around Venice" which celebrates just that! Enjoy!! (via OpenCulture)

I love the paint schems for those houses, if the sky were grey than I cpuld imagine and Irish village beacouse of thise bright colours
love the colourful houses with the combination of clear blue skies.
Love all you photos of Burano. I must agree, that is one colorful place. One of mine is from there too! Have a happy weekend.
Nearly every photo is like a gallery of colour! Incredible houses!
Having color of your own to offset gray winter days makes sense to me. Which is why I never quite understood so many people opt for black, grays and such for winter wear colors! ;b
Heh, you are making my human want to travel, which is never a good thing!
I would like to go to Venice for many reasons, and you've just helped me add one more!
Beautiful! Someday I'll go there . . .
That is truly an amazing place -- I'm sure the paint stores have a blast mixing all those colors! Whatever the reason for the colorful buildings, I have always loved them whenever I came across them in my travels, and always wondered why suburban america is so in love with beige.

Burano was just made for this theme! I like your theory about why they paint the houses. Love your photos!
