Terrible shame though it is... to tell the truth, "Big Whitey" by sixteenth-century sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati was never the most appreciated statue in the piazza. According to Frommer's, "Michelangelo, to whom many a Renaissance quip is attributed, took one look at it and shook his head, moaning 'Ammannato, Ammannato, what a beautiful piece of marble you've ruined" [rovinato] !!
