Nan McElroy's blogged about one of my favorite serendipitous sights in Venice: the mountains!
So far, I personally haven't been able to take a photo which does this marvelous scene justice...
What I love is that there are several birds-eye view antique maps which show the nearby Dolomite mountain range. (As you may or may not be able to see in background of the image below of a 1486 map from the Centro Interdipartimentale di ricerca sull' Iconografia della Città europea in Naples).

So when the mainland's smog clears enough to reveal those marvelous peaks once again, I feel like I'm looking back light-years through the mists of time! Breathtaking!!
